Before an ATM is installed in a Spartanburg business, review the site as well as the machine. Equipment selection, customer access, property permission, and a clear response procedure belong in the installation discussion.

One incident does not establish the risk at a proposed retail location. Use it as a prompt to ask which physical-security decisions have been addressed before installation.

Review the site with the installer

Supply photographs of the proposed spot, the customer approach, and the surrounding area. Ask the installer to assess the floor, anchoring method, service access, and the suitability of the machine for the setting. Get property-owner permission for installation work where needed.

Identify who approves the installation and who documents it. Avoid assuming that the cabinet's weight answers the anchoring question. Physical installation should follow the equipment and site requirements established by the qualified installer.

Check the actual safe configuration

A model name may cover more than one equipment configuration. Hyosung's Force product page describes business-hours and Level 1 safe options. Ask which configuration appears in your quote and whether it is appropriate for the intended location. Source: Hyosung Americas, Force.

Do not turn a safe designation into an assurance that the machine cannot be attacked. Discuss the overall installation, alarm arrangements, and insurance questions with the relevant providers.

Include customer access in the review

Look at lighting and sightlines during the hours the ATM would be available. Review the space where someone stands to use it and where another customer might wait. Consider whether normal business activity would obscure the machine or block the approach.

Have accessibility addressed during planning. Section 707 of the U.S. Access Board's standards covers ATMs; equipment features should be reviewed along with their installed setting. Source: U.S. Access Board.

Decide how staff report concerns

Give staff an operator contact and a process for reporting visible damage, an unexpected service visit, or a machine that behaves differently. Ask the operator how staff can verify that a technician is authorized before granting access.

Staff should follow the agreed incident procedure. Leave equipment investigation to the responsible professionals, and keep identifying information about service personnel and access arrangements out of public notices.

Clarify ownership and insurance responsibilities

Ask separately about the ATM, its cash, and damage to the premises. Have your insurer review the proposed arrangement. If you choose placement, confirm the provider's responsibilities in the agreement; if you buy, address installation and repair arrangements in the quote.
